Solo Herta-Herta si sentì in dovere di deprecare i brutti tempi, in cui perfino i nobiluomini con i quali lei era in stretti rapporti facevano i bagagli per la Svizzera. Tutti erano sindacalmente organizzati e cercavano il loro delegato, un «membro del Consiglio degli operai», sì, pensate un po’, un membro del Consiglio degli operai! Truccati e profumati come un negozio di cosmetici, con farfallini, catenine, anelli, pendenti d’incerta provenienza vitrea, cercavano un «delegato», erano sindacalmente organizzati.
Nella casa di Wallensteinstrasse, nel ventesimo distretto, rimarrà – saltuariamente insieme alla madre – fino al 1916, anno del suo reclutamento. Già nel periodo universitario Roth compone poesie. Nell’agosto del 1919 «Der Neue Tag» invia Roth nell’Ungheria occidentale di lingua tedesca: dovrà riferire sulla situazione politica locale e far propaganda a Vienna per l’annessione di quella parte del territorio magiaro che sarebbe poi diventata (esclusa Sopron/Ödenburg, rimasta all’Ungheria) la regione austriaca del Burgenland.
